About Us

ABOUT NATIONAL PLANNING COMMISSION

The National Planning Commission was originally established by Decree No 12 of 1992 and later amended by Act 71 of 1993. The Commission has the mandate to determine and advise the Government of  the Federation on matters relating to National Development and overall management of the national economy. The detailed objectives, functions, powers and structure of the Commission are outlined under sections 2, 3 and 5 of the Establishment Act.

 
OUR VISION
To be the most efficient planning institution that guides the growth and development of Nigerian economy to be and among the leading economies in the world.

OUR MISSION
To pro-actively determine and efficiently advise on matters relating to national development and overall management of the economy for positive growth; and to ensure that plans and policies are properly implemented by all relevant stakeholders.
 
FUNCTIONS
The Act provides the commission with the following functions:

  • To provide policy advice to the President in particular and Nigeria in general on all spheres of national life;
  • To set national priorities and goals and engender consensus among Government agencies, as may be contained in guidelines issued by the Commission from time to time;
  • To undertake periodic review and appraisal of the human and material resources capabilities of Nigeria with a view to advancing their development, efficiency and effective utilization;
  • To formulate and prepare long-term, medium-term and short-term national development plans and to co-ordinate such plans at the Federal, State and Local government levels;
  • To monitor projects and progress relating to plan implementation;
  • To advise on changes and adjustments in institutions and management techniques as well as attitudes necessary for the alignment of actions with plan targets and goals;
  • To conduct research into various aspects of national interest and public policy and ensure that the implications and results of the findings in such research are geared towards the enhancement of national, economic, social, technological defence and security capabilities and management;
  • To mobilize popular group and institutional consensus in support of Government policies and programmes;
  • To manage multilateral and bilateral economic co-operation, including development aid and technical assistance;

  • To deal with matters relating to regional economic co-operation, including the Economic community of West African States [ECOWAS] the African Common Market [ACM], the United Nations Economic commission for African and the South-south co-operation; and
  • To carry out such other duties as are necessary or expedient for the full discharge of all or any of the functions conferred on the Commission under the Act.

NIIMP: Technical Working Groups' (TWGs) Fourth Meeting Commences

 

Progress is being achieved in the development process of National Integrated Infrastructure Master Plan (NIIMP), which being coordinated by the National Planning Commission, as the fourth meeting of the TWGs has commenced today at the Congress Hall, Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja

National Planning Commission, a government think tank on the overall national development, under the current Minister and Deputy Chairman of the Commission, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman, CON, conceived and initiated the idea to develop an infrastructure master plan for Nigeria

Honourable Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, has stated that the Federal Government will work to ensure that the benefits of its interventions are internalised and replicated for greater impact in the economy.

The Minister gave the assurance in Abuja, Tuesday, April 30th, 2013 during the signing ceremony of the financing agreements for the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) Programme, Phase III.

FG GETS 94 MILLION EUROS EU SUPPORT FOR WATER SUPPLY AND SANITATION PROGRAMME

 

Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman, CON, has on Thursday, April 25th, 2013, on behalf  of the Federal Government, signed a memorandum of Understanding (M0U) for the implementation of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), support  for  Water supply and Sanitation Sector Reform programme in Nigeria.

 

The 10th EDF, is a phase ii programme for six focal states in Nigeria, namely; Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, Kano, Osun and Yobe.

STATISTICAL DATA NOW CREDIBLE, MANAGABLE IN NIGERIA -Dr Shamsuddeen

 

Minister / Deputy Chairman of National Planning Commission, Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, has described the data and statistics the National Bureau and Statistics (NBS) now generates for the country as credible and much more manageable .

The Minister stated this, Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013, at the headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abuja while presenting his 2012 performance score card  to the National Working  Committee (NEC) of the party.
