|
|
 Dr. Shamsuddeen Usman, CON got a B.Sc degree in Economics in 1973 from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and an M.Sc and a Ph.D from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 1976 and 1980, respectively.
He has worked variously in both the public and private sectors of the Nigerian economy: Planning Officer, Kano State Ministry of Economic Planning (1974 – 1976), Lecturer, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, (1976 – 1981), Controller, Nigerian Industrial Development Bank (NIDB) (now Bank of Industry) (1981 – 1985), Director of Budget/Special Economic Adviser (while on leave of absence from NIDB) (1981 – 1983), General Manager, Corporate Banking, NAL Merchant Bank Plc (1985 – 1998), Director-General, Technical Committee on Privatisation & Commercialisation (TCPC), now Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE) (1989 – 1991). He served as Executive Director, United Bank of Africa Plc and later Union Bank of Nigeria Plc between 1992 and 1994 and became Managing Director & Chief Executive, NAL Merchant Bank Plc in October, 1994. He was appointed Deputy Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), in June, 1999. While in the CBN, he was in charge of financial sector surveillance from June, 1999 to December, 2003 and in charge of operations from January 2004 to July, 2007.
He was appointed the Hon. Minister of Finance from July, 2007 to December, 2008, from where he was appointed Honourable Minister/Deputy chairman, National Planning Commission in December, 2008. Dr. Usman has attended many international conferences and missions and served on the boards of several public and private sector companies. He has also earned several honours, including President, Nigerian Economic Society (NES) (1986 – 1987), Fellow, NES (June, 1995) Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR) and Fellow, Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (FCIB ) (2008).

Minister/Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, Dr Shamsuddeen Usman, CON, has on Thursday, April 25th, 2013, on behalf of the Federal Government, signed a memorandum of Understanding (M0U) for the implementation of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), support for Water supply and Sanitation Sector Reform programme in Nigeria. The 10th EDF, is a phase ii programme for six focal states in Nigeria, namely; Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, Kano, Osun and Yobe.
